In the Taiwan today, the art of jade carving has reached yet another summit in its development. Traditional forms and modern styles are combined into striking new creations, and modern technology has greatly elevated the quality of workmanship. No longer is jade for the exclusive use of emperors and noblemen; just about everyone in the Taiwan has the means to own and wear jade. Beyond maintaining its historical role, jade artistry has been further developed with creativity and skill, and has become an indispensable part of everyday life. Jade remains an eternal symbol of China’s magnificent civilization.

The manufacture of Chinese jade articles was already highly developed by the Shang Dynasty (16th to 11th century B.C). The Chinese of this period had the technology to produce jade articles of every imaginable type, shape, and size. By the end of the Chou Dynasty (11th century to 256 B.C.) and the beginning of the Han Dynasty, Chinese jades reached a second peak in their development. Craftsmen had at their disposal more advanced tools and efficient methods of polishing jade and creating unsurpassed masterpieces. One technique involved carving an article with several linked components out of a single piece of jade, demonstrating the high sophistication of the craftsman’s mastery. From this point on, jade craftsmen could accommodate practically any and every customer demand in their work.

Jade ornaments have remained popular up until the present day. Today in the Taiwan, the purchase, wearing, and giving of jade items as gifts is still very common. Jade is viewed as an ideal gift for couples making a mutual commitment, and for one’s children when they get married. Even now, the Chinese retain the idea that in addition to being beautiful, jade can protect from misfortune and bring good luck.

Burying jade objects with the dead was a common practice in ancient China.

Jade is an essence produced through the natural forces of rivers and mountains over eons. However, if it is not skillfully cut and polished, there is no way for the potential richness and luster that people prize to be expressed. The Chinese have a saying that goes. “If jade is not properly cut, it cannot be made into a useful utensil.” Cutting is an important step in the process of producing jade articles.

”The living wear jade as a symbol of their moral integrity, and jade accompanies the deceased to comfort their souls.” Over four thousand years ago in China, great quantities of jade utensils were often laid over or around a casket, particularly the pi-representing the round heaven,Jade Charms, and the ts’ung signifying the rectangular earth. They were a symbolic link of communication between heaven and earth, of exchange between man and the spiritual world. Later, jade articles were carved specifically for burial with the dead, based on the idea that the jade’s qualities of nobility, perfection, constancy, and immortality would prevent the physical body from decay. Examples of jade objects for burial use are a thin, light jade cicada which was placed in the mouth of the dead, and a thick, round jade piglet, which was enclosed in a hand of the deceased. A cicada goes under the ground and is “reborn” after shedding its skin; and a pig breeds quickly, thus increasing wealth. Thus natural motifs are used to express human desires for reincarnation or increased wealth for one’s family.

The development of jade utensils after the Sung (960-1279 A.D.) and Yuan (1271-1368 A.D.) dynasties tended more towards pure craftsmanship and artistry. Except for a small number of ritual jade utensils set out by the emperor in sacrificial rites, the carving of large quantities of jade utensils in this era is attributable mainly to their sophisticated aesthetic appeal. The majority of carved jade items were ornamental in nature, including pieces for display and items for personal use. But ornamental jade display pieces were also used for reasons. Such articles included brush holders, brush washers, water cups, armrests, and red ink paste (for name chops) boxes. Fine and exquisite workmanship endowed each piece with richness, luster, and delicacy, reflecting the high quality of life aspired to by the Chinese. Jade items for personal use included combs, hairpins, bracelets, and waist pendants. Jade ornaments were also set in walking sticks, waist sashes, garments, and caps.

Sacrificial and auspicious articles were used in ancient institutionalized rites, and are generally referred to as “ritual utensils.” Sacrificial utensils were used in offerings to ancestors or in paying ceremonial respect to the gods of heaven and earth. We know from archaeological remains that people of the Neolithic Era carved a great number of round pi and rectangular ts’ung for use as sacrificial utensils. The concept of a round heaven and rectangular earth, which eventually became deeply ingrained in the Chinese mind, may have first emerged around this time. “Auspicious utensils” were carried or worn by the nobility as symbols of their office or authority. For example, jade axes and spades later evolved into kuei, elongated pointed tablets of jade. When the “son of heaven,” or emperor, dispatched a duke, prince, or other official for external duty, he would give him a “tablet of authority” to proclaim the task assigned to him by the “son of heaven.” The traditional function of ritual jade utensils gradually began to wane after the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.), when only a small number of sacrificial jade utensils were used in ceremonial rites led by the emperor.

The word “jade” communicates a sense of mystery. In Chinese, “jade” (yu) refers to a fine, beautiful stone with a warm color and rich luster, that is skillfully and delicately carved. In Chinese culture, jade symbolizes nobility, perfection, constancy, and immortality. For millennia, jade has been an intimate part of the lives of Chinese of all ranks and classes. It is viewed as the most valuable of all precious stones.

Jade is found in mountains and riverbeds,Jade Beads, and Chinese consider jade to be “the essence of heaven and earth.” When polished and carved into various articles, jade is attributed with certain cultural characteristics. In ancient Chinese cosmology, the firmament was considered to be round, and the earth square. Thus a round jade ceremonial ornament with a hole in the center, called a pi, was carved to honor the gods of heaven, and a long hollow jade ornament with rectangular sides, called a ts’ung, was made to honor the spirits of earth. According to ancient Chinese legend, the phoenix and the dragon are animal deities that were the life-source of family clans. For this reason, jade was often used as a material for carving phoenixes and dragons worn as ornaments. These ornaments symbolized the noble bearing of a gentleman, and are the origin of the Chinese saying : “The gentleman’s morals are like jade.”

Jadeite forms solid solutions with other pyroxene endmembers such as augite and diopside (CaMg-rich endmembers), aegirine (NaFe endmember), and kosmochlor (NaCr endmember)

Jadeite is formed in metamorphic rocks under high pressure and relatively low temperature conditions Jadeite’s color commonly ranges from white through pale apple green to deep jade green but can also be blue-green (like the famous and recently rediscovered “Olmec Blue” jade), pink, lavender, and a multitude of other rare colors. Chloromelanite is a very dark green to black variety.[6] Color is largely affected by the presence of trace elements such as chromium and iron. Its translucence can be anywhere from entirely solid through opaque to almost clear. Variations in color and translucence are often found even within a single specimen.

Jadeite can be semi-transparent to opaque and covers the spectrum from colorless through white, green, yellow, brown, red, orange, violet, to grey and black in color. In general, the color range and saturation values are greater than with nephrite, as is the maximum possible degree of translucency. Some of the colors are given variety, folk or trade names such as Imperial, apple green, moss-in-snow or chloromelanite. Imperial is the variety with the most highly saturated green color, apple green has some yellow, spinach green is darker and less vivid than Imperial or apple green, moss in snow has patterns in white and green, and chloromelanite is such a dark green as to appear black. Various combinations of chromium and iron are responsible for the different colors.

By far, the most valuable variety of jadeite is that termed “Imperial”. The finest of these gems are nearly transparent and have the most highly saturated, even, green color, rivaling the finest emeralds. Such pieces are extremely scarce and astronomically expensive–the name derives from the time when only the Imperial household was permitted, and could afford to own it. Among the other green colors, the next most valuable shade is termed “apple green”. Fine, translucent, lavender pieces can rival good greens in price, whereas highly mottled or opaque gems are worth considerably less. Cholormelanite has some value as a scarce collector material. As with nephrite, much of the value in jadeite works of art comes from the skill with which they were carved or the antiquity of the pieces. Enhanced material is very modestly priced

Jewelry is one precious object that nearly all the people want to own one, like Chinese People love ornamental jade jewelry like jade ring, jade bangle, jade pendant and carved jade jewelry more than other jewelry. Some other country’s people love diamand or other gems.No matter which jewelry you love, how to keep it is one important issue that anyone need to take care,Now we just take gold or other metal jewelry for example to explain how to clean the jewelry.
Fine jewelry can very easily become tarnished, dirty and dull. To keep your favorite pieces shiny, sparkling and new, proper jewelry care is the key. The wrong method of cleaning can also cause permanent damage to your jewelry! Please consider the following recommendations to ensuring a long and beautiful life for your jewelry. This list is not all inclusive and only provides warnings for some of the most common mistakes in cleaning jewelry.

General Cleaning
1. Before you start cleaning jewelry always do a quick visual check to see if there are any loose or damaged gemstones; cracked or broken metal; bent or warped prongs/tips; discolored or pitting metal. You wouldn’t want to cause any further damage.
2. Jewelry should be removed before showering or cleaning. A film can form if the soap is not washed off completely. This film will then become a magnet for dirt, dust and other contaminants.
3. Use a nub free, 100% cotton cloth and gently wipe the piece clean using only the soft pads of your fingers.
4. You can also purchase jeweler’s cloths from jewelry stores. Be sure to use fresh cloths since the dirt and grit left on the cloth from a previous use will now leave scrapes and pits in the piece you are trying to clean and polish. 5. Commercial cleaners can be purchased at jewelry stores. Always remember to read the instructions on the commercial cleaners first before you attempt cleaning.
6. Never clean your jewelry in bleach! Doing this will literally breakdown your jewelry. Bleach as an oxidizing agent that will react to the metal, causing it to become very brittle. Similarly, avoid swimming pools and bathing in hot tubs as chlorine products are added to prevent bacteria growth.
7. Besides chlorine bleach, denatured alcohol, turpentine, acetone, and ammonia are harmful too. These chemicals can dull or even pit the surface on softer gemstones.
8. For best results, polish silver or gold with a jewelry polishing cloth. Use of tissue or paper towels can cause scratches because of the fibers in these products.
9. An old toothbrush is very handy. Make sure that you use an old, soft bristle brush. Lightly brush at hard to reach areas while frequently applying cleaning solution.
10. Never use toothpaste or other abrasives to clean metal or stones. Some websites recommend toothpaste as a cleaner, but this is not an accepted practice by fine jewelers. The abrasives in toothpaste can damage the surface of the metal. Toothpaste will also abrade the surface on amber, lapis, turquoise and other soft stones.
11. An ultrasonic vibrating cleaner may be appropriate for some jewelry, but always read the instructions first. Ultrasonic vibrating machines can loosen or damage precious gemstones while cleaning the jewelry. And the chemicals are not recommended for pearls and many other fine stones. Also never ultrasonic different metals at the same time, silver can tarnish gold if cleaned together.
12. Be careful when cleaning costume or vermeil jewelry, as it’s very sensitive to any cleaning solutions. Costume or vermeil jewelry is a base metal with another layer of more precious metal (e.g. Gold) plated over or absorbed into it. This layer is not made for abrasive cleaning.
13. Always use warm not HOT water. Cleaning agents can be absorbed and react to very hot water causing jewelry to discolor. Sterling silver is especially sensitive to hot water and can discolor in a heartbeat.
14. Be very careful when using any soaking method to clean jewelry that has soft stones such as amber, lapis lazuli, or turquoise. Extended soaking in any solution may harm the polish on the stone and cause it to discolor.

Hope this can help you.Read more about the jade knowledge by visiting the jade blog or to enjoy our great collected jade jewelry to enjoy the chinese jade charm.

2. Check to see if your jewelry is becoming worn or dull. Invest in a magnifying glass or jeweler’s loop so that you can find problem areas. Check for flat or worn-out spots where constant rubbing can happen. Inspect for thinning or cracking that can lead to bigger problems later.
3. The number one cause of lost precious gemstones is worn or broken prongs or tips. Check for rattling or movement among gemstones. Inspect in all areas around stones to see if settings are tight and secure. Use a pair of tweezers or a toothpick and gently nudge stones to check for any wiggle or movement. In some cases, impacted dirt under gemstone settings can actually keep stones intact under pressure until they are cleaned, then they can become very loose and fall out if not inspected.
4. Some precious metal jewelry tarnishes easily. To remove tarnish, use a liquid jewelry cleaner with a dipping tray or a spray bottle. Read the instructions on the cleaner first. Wear gloves to protect yourself from the strong chemicals and work in a well-ventilated area. After rinsing the jewelry in warm water, dry it with a towel, then with a polishing cloth.
5. For broken clasps, go to a jewelry supply store or a craft department and purchase a replacement clasp, “jump” rings, and fastening tools. These may also be purchased online in jewelry repair kits.
6. To flatten a chain, lay the piece down on a desk with a layer of cloth and roll a round pen or pencil over the area until it becomes straight.
7. Some tools such as a chain nose (needle nose jeweler’s pliers) or other pliers may be helpful. When you need to attach a clasp, a jump ring (loop of gold) may be used to hold parts together. The pliers allow opening and closing the loop. Open a jump ring by moving one side towards you and the other away from you. Twist open then simply twist back the same way to close.
8. If you have a ring that has lost its roundness, you can try to gently put it back in shape again. Find a dowel, metal or wooden handle of a kitchen utensil or any other sturdy, round item that your ring will fit on. Using a rawhide or resin hammer, gently tap the ring back into shape around the round handle. You can also cushion the ring with a towel. Be careful not to damage theringwith the head of the hammer!

Now that you have purchased the jade jewelry, then you must cherish it a lot.so you should learn to keep it carefully. In order for you to own one great jade fine jewelry for long time, here we will provide some fundamental ways for you to keep you jade jewelry.

Having purchased a jade article is just half the process of collecting. Jade is like a child that needs constant care. Enthusiasts need to work more to maintain this artwork, or blemishes may appear.

First, avoid bumping on hard surfaces as jade is delicate. Although sometimes a crack cannot be seen by the naked eye, the interior structure may have been damaged. As time goes on, it will appear and reduce the value of the piece.
Second, protect jade articles from dust or greasy dirt. If tainted, they must be scrubbed with a soft brush and light suds and washed with clean water.

Third, when left unused it is best to store the jade in a case or box to protect it from being bumped.

Fourth, jade should be kept away from perfume, perspiration or chemicals. The brightness of jade risks corrosion, especially emerald and other high quality jade, so it is better to clean it with a soft cloth after wearing it.
Fifth, do not expose jade to sunlight for a long time, or it may expand and the quality will change slightly.

Finally, jade has certain water content so keep it in an area of humidity to protect it from over-drying.
Jade Jewelry is precious gem.It can bring luck and happiness for your life.Chinese People believe that Jade Jewelry is one spirituale object. It can sense many things then bring health and happiness to you.Just keep care of your jade jewelry.

Jade is actually two different minerals. One is nephrite jade(called soft Jade in China), a member of the amphibole family. The other is jadeite (called hard jade in China), one pyroxene mineral. Chinese ancient jade is nephrite jade. After about 1780, however, jadeite from Burma was imported in abundance into China and became one of the most widely used jade there.Jade is highly praised by the Chinese because it represents many sentiments in the Chinese people’s eye.you can learn more by read Chinese Jade Culture.
Now that jade is one precious gem then How does one tell nephrite from jadeite?
Both types of jade are harder than a knife blade, fine-grained, translucent and colored in many shades of green, tan and brown. In a few cases, color can be a help. Very pale to nearly white jade is almost always nephrite. More boldly colored jade such as vivid malachite green, purple, blue or bright red is almost always jadeite. The colors are due to trace element impurities, such as iron, vanadium or manganese.
Some useful tests help distinguish jadeite from nephrite. A streak plate has a hardness of 6.5. Jadeite is harder than a streak plate, while nephrite is softer. Nephrite is less dense (3.0 grams/cc) compared to jadeite (3.3 grams/cc). Thus jadeite will sink in liquid methyl iodide, while nephrite will float. Jadeite will fuse relatively easily when hit with a blow torch flame, while nephrite will fuse only with great difficulty. This is obviously not a test to do on an antique! There are also subtle differences in appearance. Jadeite is glassier compared to a more waxy luster for nephrite. Nephrite is also tougher to break, even though it is softer on the Mohs’ scale. This toughness is due to nephrite’s internal structure which is made of many microscopic interlocking fibers put together like felt.
Jadeite and nephrite are both metamorphic minerals. Nephrite often forms in metamorphosed fragments of the crust and upper mantle faulted up when ocean crust and continental crust collide during mountain building. Jadeite forms when these rocks are pushed deep down subduction zones and experience low temperature but very high pressure. Only large scale faulting will bring jadeite-bearing rocks back to the surface. The best place to find such large vertical movements is in young mountain belts, like those forming in the Circum-Pacific and Himalayan zones. Thus, cultures of the Pacific Rim were those blessed with these remarkable gemstones.

Difficult to impossible to distinguish nephrite jade from jadeite jade by visual inspection. Specific gravity determination is the most reliable of simple I.D. methods for distinguishing the two. Great variety of materials offered as imitations, e.g. talc (soapstone), serpentine, amazonite, dyed chalcedony, and others. All can have colors remarkably similar to jade, but properties above, particularly S.G., can be used to distinguish. Dyed jade can be most easily distinguished from undyed jade by examination with a Chelsea filter; undyed jadeite will not show the red color of dyed jadeite or nephrite when looked at through the filter.
